The Oxford Shower Project

Christmas Dinner for Homeless in Shower Project 2013

December 22nd saw the guests at the Oxford Shower Project queuing up for their Christmas goodies - turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, mince pies, Christmas pudding with cream, chocolates and treats for everyone. Each guest received a Christmas present containing scarf or hat, gloves, underwear, socks, chocolate bar and a toiletry item.

Christmas Dinner for Homeless in Shower Project

We are very grateful for generous donations from Shower Project supporters, the Companions of the Order of Malta and the parishioners of St Giles and the Oxford Oratory Church which enabled us to make these offerings to our homeless friends.

More than £800 was raised at a fundraising dinner to support the Oxford Shower Project in the town’s St Giles Parish Hall. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous Indian meal prepared by Rohini, Shiyamala and Oudesh which volunteers helped to serve. “The Parish Hall looked lovely and was filled with a very positive energy,” said Eleanor, one of the organisers.

One of the raffle prize winners was Tony H who was delighted to win a purple Snuggly, a garment designed to be worn whilst watching TV. He tried it on to the amusement of guests and decided to donate it to the Shower Project. Dave, one of our homeless guests was delighted to receive it the following Saturday.

Eleanor gave a brief talk on the history of the Shower Project which has now been running since October 2007, offering showers and toiletries, hot food and drinks to our homeless friends in Oxford on a weekly basis. This was followed by a screening of Amma’s Embracing the World DVD.

After the meal Fra’ John Eidinow of St Benet’s College gave a talk on the work of The Companions of the Order of Malta and their history since 1084. The Companions have been involved with the Shower Project, sharing expenses, and providing student volunteers since last year and we are very grateful for their support. “Thanks to all those who bought raffle tickets and who donated so generously,” said Eleanor.

The Oxford Shower Project is now being run by the Companions of the Order of Malta with the link: http://www.orderofmalta.org.uk/companions/
