About Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma)

Accessible to anyone and everyone, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi is a living embodiment of India’s great spiritual tradition. Humble, but firm as the earth, simple, yet beautiful like the full moon—Amma is the personification of love, truth, renunciation and self-sacrifice. She not only teaches, but practices her teachings every moment of her life. She is a giver of everything and the receiver of nothing. She is a profound spiritual teacher and a compassionate mother. Such is Mata Amritanandamayi Devi.

Mata Amritanandamayi Devi’s entire life is an incomparable example of selfless, unconditional love. Throughout decades of tireless service, Amma has personally counselled and consoled millions of suffering people from all walks of life and from every corner of the globe. She wipes their tears with her own hands and removes the burden of their sorrows. The personal touch, the warmth, the compassion, tenderness and deep concern Amma shows constantly for everyone, the innocence and charm ever so natural to her are all unmistakable and unique. To Amma, each and every being in this universe is her own child. As Amma herself has said: “An unbroken stream of love flows from me towards all beings in the universe. This love is my inborn nature.”

During the past 60 years, this unbroken stream of love has watered the seeds of compassion in the hearts of countless people the world over, inspiring them towards a more selfless outlook wherein others’ pain and joy are seen as one’s own. It is in this manner that Embracing the World, Mata Amritanandamayi’s worldwide network of humanitarian programmes, has arisen. Homes for the homeless, pensions for widows and physically disabled people, scholarships for poor children, orphanages, charitable hospitals, environmental initiatives… all of these and more have blossomed forth from the waters of Amma’s compassion.

As Amma says, spirituality both begins and ends with compassion: “No one is an isolated island; we are all links in the great chain of life. Just as the right hand reaches out to aid the left hand when it is injured, the ability to feel the sufferings of all beings as our own, and an intense yearning to comfort them, should awaken within us.”

"As long as there is enough strength in these hands to reach out to those who come to her, to place her hand on a crying person's shoulder, Amma will continue to give darshan. To lovingly caress people, to console and wipe their tears until the end of this mortal frame -this is Amma's wish." -Amma
